*Hi-Desert Medical Center Announces Free Alzheimer's Support Group*
Those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease
know that it can be tremendously stressful. In fact, the
stress of family care giving for people with dementia
has been shown to impact a person's immune
system for up to three years after their care giving
ends, thus increasing their chances of developing a
chronic illness themselves. Family care givers who
acknowledge their role reach out more actively for
resources, obtain more help, and communicate better
with their loved one's doctor. Hi-Desert Medical
Center is urging those caring for loved ones with
dementia and Alzheimer's disease to reach out
through a new Alzheimer's family caregivers support
group, held the second and fourth Friday of each
month, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Helen Gray
Education Center. Moderated by HDMC Social Worker
Margaret Hinton, LCSW, the support group is a source
of emotional support, resource and information
sharing and a social outlet. The drop-in group is free.

*Nolina Peak: Future Secured*
The Mojave Desert Land Trust chose the summer
solstice to celebrate the final phases of the Nolina
Peak project. Acquisition of the Peak, which is on the
Joshua Tree border with Yucca Valley, marked a
major milestone in the Land Trust's mission and an
important victory for the entire Morongo Basin.
Immediately after its creation in 2005, The Mojave
Desert Land Trust was challenged to develop a major
campaign to purchase over 600 acres bordering
Joshua Tree National Park. This was identified as a
critical open space buffer between Joshua Tree and
the park, and became an important objective to the
Land Trust. The intent was to acquire this critical land
and donate it to the National Park Service.
The entire Morongo Basin, neighboring communities
and a large land conservation foundation responded,
and in May 2007 escrow closed and Nolina Peak,
named by the Land Trust, became a major community
symbol and regional triumph. The mountain was put
on a fast-track program to transfer into Joshua Tree
National Park and today, June 2008, this process is
nearing completion. Within the next few months
Nolina Peak will become part of Joshua Tree National
Park forever.
To mark and celebrate the completion of this
groundbreaking program, and to honor the
extraordinary support and involvement from our
community, The Mojave Desert Land Trust conducted
a solemn and moving ceremony, high on the
mountain Saturday, June 21.

HI-DESERT CULTURAL CENTER HOSTS OPEN HOUSE AND AUDITIONS
July 19-20, 2008
As renovations continue on the historic main theatre,
the center prepares for a new season in our state-of-
the-art Blak Box Theatre
Ever wanted to be in a show? Ever wanted to design
a stage? Well, now's your chance! The Hi-Desert
Cultural Center announces an opportunity for the
whole community to be involved in our next season of
professional live entertainment whether on-stage or
off. Celebrating over 41 years, the Cultural Center will
host an open house and auditions Saturday, July 19
and Sunday, July 20.
The Cultural Center will be hosting the open houses
both days from 11:00am until 12:00 NOON to provide
an opportunity for residents to see firsthand what is
happening at the Cultural Center. "Even if you're just
curious about what is going on at the Cultural Center,
please stop by, enjoy a glass of ice tea, and we'll give
you a little tour," stated President Jarrod Radnich, who
is currently co-developing entertainment with Disney
for its theme park in Anaheim, CA with Vice President
Craig Knudsen.
After each open house, adults and children are
welcome to audition between 12:00 NOON until
5:00pm. We are looking for all ages that can act, sing,
dance, or play music. Or, if you want to be behind the
scenes, you can help build sets in our traditional
carpenter shop, design costumes, help with
concessions, or even work with state-of-the-art
technologies like a 7.2 surround sound system and a
computerized spinning lighting system.
The Cultural Center plans to build upon last year's
successes that included a "Best Comedy" award from
the Desert Theatre League and an "Encore" award for
theatrical excellence from the Desert Entertainer
Magazine. The new season will include four locally
built productions in addition to concerts and theatrical
entertainment brought in from outside of the area. "To
get everyone involved, we wanted a well-rounded
season to include a musical tribute, a heart-warming
Christmas story, a tragic comedy, and a world premier
sequel," stated Artistic Director Ron House.
Specifically, the productions scheduled for the
upcoming Blak Box season include: "Pump Boys and
Dinettes," "A Christmas Story," "Crimes of the Heart,"
and "Bullshot Crummond and the Invisible Bride of
Death," a new sequel to the international comedy that
was made into a movie by Beatle George Harrison.
Individuals interested in auditioning should contact
Craig Knudsen at 760.861.5599 to schedule an
appointment between 12:00 NOON and 5:00pm on
either Saturday or Sunday. Audition sides will be
available to download online at www.hid
esertculturalcenter.com.
